As promised, today we’re taking a trip to the beach. But that’s not all. We’re also embarking on a new feature here at TSLOK: Five Senses Friday. I’ve borrowed the idea from another blog I follow called Pink of Perfection. Check it out if you have a minute; it’s lovely and features some delicious recipes and photos!

The general gist is that you reflect on a moment in your day by way of your five senses: taste, touch, sight, sound and smell. I absolutely love this idea, especially since I’m a firm believer in how cooking and food in general involves more than just the tasty factor.

I’m sorry, you’re getting restless aren’t you? Ready to head to the beach? It’s not far – just across the street. Did you pack your sunscreen? Yes you do need some. And don’t give me that “but I never burn” excuse. There isn’t a cloud in the sky and the temperature is creeping past 80.

Alright, let’s go!

Seeing: A never-ending stretch of white sand. An ocean the color of green sea glass. Dozens of rainbow-colored beach umbrellas. Little ones working hard like baby Berninis at their sand sculptures.

Feeling: The soft sand on my toes ~ like superfine sugar.

Hearing: The faint tinkling of the ocean as it rolls over the small seashells at the tide’s edge ~ it reminds me of a wind chime.

Smelling: It’s a mix between sea salt and coconut oil ~ the scent of pure vacation.

Tasting: My specialty ~ a poor girl’s grapefruit margarita. Sweet, tart and salty with just a touch of lime. The perfect cocktail for a day spent in the sand.

And here are a few more photos from our beach adventures…

Well, I hope you have all enjoyed your trip to the beach. Hopefully it made your Friday that much more sunny. Make sure to head back this way tomorrow ~ we’ll be venturing north to the town of Naples for some shopping and a trip to the Irish pub!

Nordstrom, Guinness and Florida sunshine. Can you think of a better combination?

Poor Girl’s Margarita

My dad came up with this drink originally. His mix involves tequila and a can of Squirt. Essentially, it’s the drink you make when tequila is on hand but you’re out of (or are too broke to afford) triple sec, margarita salt and a blender. All you really need is tequila, the rest is up to you!

You will need:

1.5 ounces tequila
2 ounces grapefruit juice
8 ounces Sprite or 7-Up
a squeeze of lime
ice

Directions:

Mix all the ingredients in a glass.

Add ice.

Stir, stir, stir.

Drink on the beach with your toes in the sand.

Yield ~ 1 cocktail
